David Free
Central Florida Sounds of Freedom Band Oboe & English Horn
Maitland, Florida
Hi all. I am a Canadian by birth and now I am living and working here in the U.S. My current career is in hospice/palliative care.
I have been playing oboe and english horn for almost 40 years. For five years, I played professionally in Canada's premiere Naval Band. I've continued to play semi-professionally since my honorable release, when I went back to school for my current career. My main love is the english horn, but I also love playing oboe. I also play bass oboe, which is rarely used and really fun to play.
As far as the Pride Band Alliance groups, I played with the Big Apple Corps during a one-year palliative fellowship in NYC, and then 2 years with the D.C.. Different Drummers. I currently play with the CFSOF in Orlando and will join the SFPWE in Fort Lauderdale upon my work transfer in January 2022. I have also participated in parades on piccolo with the Oak Lawn, Freedom Trail, and the Triangle Pride Bands. I am so appreciative of the welcoming nature of the LGBA/PBA over the past decade. I also currently play in the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra in Florida and sub in with other groups.
This will be my first conference and I am really looking forward to it. I have tried to get to one of these conferences for years but Houston had the hurricane, Portland was cancelled due to COVID, and I had to cancel going to Palm Springs at the last minute due to work commitments. I hope to meet some people and make some new friends. If you see me at the conference and we haven't met, please come up and say hello.
