Each year on November 20, people gather in communities around the world for the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This day honors the memories of people whose lives were lost in anti-transgender violence. The day falls at the end of Transgender Awareness Week, which raises the visibility of the transgender community and the need to address the issues the community faces.
The timing of the 2021 Pride Bands Alliance Annual Conference provides an opportunity for our Pride Bands family to observe the day together for the first time. All are invited to join in this observance following the Pep Band performance.
"Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice."
